Let The Sunshine In

Summer is here and that means more time in the sun! That actually can be good news (if you remember your spf!) because sunlight can have many positive effects on your mood and keep stress out of the equation. It is not simply psychological, our bodies actually go through a physiological reaction when exposed to sun.

  • The production of endorphins and serotonin in your brain is increased making you feel joyful and more energized.
  • Experiencing natural light during the day also boosts the production of the hormone Melatonin. Melatonin enhances sleep cycles enabling you to sleep better at night and leaves you better rested in the morning.
  • Spending at least 15 minutes a day in the Sun is your body’s largest source of Vitamin D. Lower levels of Vitamin D can lead to daytime grogginess. It has also been found to regulate inflammation, which at best causes physical discomfort (making you feel sleepy) and at worst can lead to a variety of diseases.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and soak up some sun, just remember to protect yourself. You will sleep more soundly, feel more energized and be a happier person all around. Could you think of any better way to kick stress to the curb?
