On Set with TV Land’s Younger

You may feel old but we just got YOUNGER! We have the behind the scenes scoop on our favorite TV series thanks to celebrity makeup artist, Eldo Ray Estes! To find out what Eldo is working on and a more exclusive look check out his Instagram and IMDb page for more info!
  • 1. How did you get started in the industry?

Completely by accident!! I was given (literally) a part-time job on the cosmetics floor of Bloomingdale’s many years ago. I ultimately ended up working for Chanel for several years. I was pursuing other avenues but I, thankfully, discovered I was a good makeup artist with an incredibly good knack at making women feel comfortable and in trusted hands. I have been a member of IATSE Local 798, the hair and makeup artist’s union, for twenty years!!
  • 2. What does a typical day on set look like?

I worked in Daytime TV for nearly 14 years at the soap operas Another World and As the World Turns. Like the shows themselves, there was never anything typical about a day on the set. Those years of working in that fast-paced environment prepared me to act fast and not to flinch at whatever curve ball is tossed in my direction.
  • 3. You’re currently the makeup artist for “Younger”, what is that like on set? Do you work with all the actors or just a select few?

I am proud to say I have been the Makeup Department Head at Younger from the beginning. We begin filming Season Four in a few days. There is a lot of love on this particular set, so every day is a joy. We get to have a lot of fun with makeup as this is a show about beautiful women. I work primarily with Sutton Foster, Debi Mazar and Molly Bernard, while my partner Anette Lian-Williams works with Hilary Duff and Miriam Shor.
  • 4. I know you work closely with Sutton Foster and we hear she is a fan of skyn ICLEAND, does she have any specific products she likes to keep in her regimen?

Sutton is the person who turned me on to skyn ICELAND. She uses The ANTIDOTE Daily Cooling Lotion in her regimen, as well as the Icelandic Relief Eye Cream. And we use the Glacial Cleansing Clothes for the many daily makeup changes we have throughout the day. And of course, I always have the Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels in the fridge for those mornings when we all need a little extra help! Everyone in the makeup trailer uses those Eye Gels when needed! They are life savers. Sutton’s character Liza even wore them during a morning scene last season!! (My personal favorite product is the Artic Face Oil. I apply it to my face first thing in the morning at home. It acts as a great moisture boost while having my morning coffee…).
  • 5. Do you have specific regimens for each actor while on set?

It varies from person to person. Some actresses (more so than actors) have their personal regimens at home and they sit down in the chair ready to go. I would never automatically reach for a moisturizer and apply it to anyone’s face without first asking them. The great thing about Skyn ICELAND is that many of the products, particularly the various face gels, can be used with any other skincare line.
  • 6. What are some skyn ICELAND staples you like to keep in your kit?

I always have the Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels in my kit, as well as The Antidote Cooling Daily Lotion. I find that moisturizer extremely compatible with any skin type. It’s great under makeup and everyone loves the cooling feeling it provides.
  • 7. Why is skincare so important on set?

Well..it may sound cliché..but good makeup starts with good skin. So you gotta keep it in the best shape possible. Most things these days are shot digitally…in HD. That has made good clear skin more important than ever.
  • 8. What are some common beauty mistakes people make?

I have always said the single most important thing in skincare is to never go to bed without washing the day off of your face. I don’t care how tired you are…stand at that sink and wash your face and put on your nighttime moisturizer. When someone sits in my chair with remnants of the day before on their face… well, let’s just say it’s not pretty. That’s the biggest beauty mistake.
  • 9. Any film/series you are working on in 2017?

We are just now beginning Season Four of “Younger”. That will carry me into the Summer. I am then slated to do a feature film about young Louise Brooks. But I stay in the moment…which is what I love about this career. The not knowing exactly what’s around the corner keeps it exciting. So far I have been lucky…
  • 10. Who would be your dream celebrity you would want to work with?

I would love to work with Tilda Swinton. She is such a chameleon.
